Dover Plains is a hamlet and census-designated place in the northern part of the town of Dover in Dutchess County, New York. With a population of 1,322 at the 2020 census, it serves as part of the larger Kiryas Joel–Poughkeepsie–Newburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community sits along NY Route 22 and benefits from convenient transportation through a Metro-North Railroad station on the Harlem Line, which connects residents to New York City.
The origins of Dover Plains remain uncertain, though early commercial activity centered on Belding & Co., a store run by Lawrence and Joseph. By 1802, the hamlet contained fewer than a dozen buildings. The business later passed to Jonathan Mabbett and James Ketcham in 1806, who became influential figures in the community. When the town of Dover was formed from the town of Pawling, Ketcham served as its first town clerk. George Casey was appointed the first postmaster, with mail delivered on horseback. Ketcham later succeeded Casey and held the position for thirty years. His contributions extended to military service in the War of 1812, five years as Town Supervisor, and membership in the State Legislature in 1814.
The nineteenth century brought growth and development. Two hotels were built in 1848: the Dover Plains Hotel by Beldin Dutcher and Preston's Hotel by George Robson. The railroad arrived in 1880, the same year the Dover Plains Military Academy was established. The community developed various institutions including a bank organized in 1857, newspapers, churches dating back to 1794, and cultural organizations such as the Reading Room Association in 1877 and the Dover Plains Library around 1899.
