Duck Hill is a town in Montgomery County, Mississippi, situated on U.S. Route 51 between Grenada and Winona, with a population of 619 according to the 2020 census. The town takes its name from a large hill northeast of town where Chief Duck, a Choctaw leader and medicine man, once held war councils.
European settlement began in 1834 when John A. Binford arrived following Indian Removal and established the first home in the area, developing it as a cotton plantation. Duck Hill became a trading center for regional cotton planters. The arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1856, which built a depot there, further stimulated local business. The town's history includes significant tragedy, including a devastating train wreck on October 19, 1862, during the Civil War when two trains collided head-on, killing 34 men, most of them Confederate soldiers.
The twentieth century brought both development and decline to Duck Hill. Lloyd T. Binford High School opened in 1930, serving the community for decades until closure due to population loss. During World War II, the town experienced a dramatic incident in 1943 when fifteen armed black soldiers from Camp McCain fired into the town overnight, angered by segregation and a recent assault on black soldiers.
Today, Duck Hill is remembered for the Lucie E. Campbell Gospel and Heritage Festival held each summer, and it remains part of Montgomery County's complex historical record, marked by both achievement and tragedy.
