The settlement's history is rooted in the Combs family, prominent residents whose activities shaped local place names. The post office that became Dwarf was originally established as Tunell Hill in 1878 by Joseph Hall. It took its name from a tunnel that brothers Sam and Felix Combs had cut for an aqueduct serving their mill. When the office was re-established in 1883 under postmaster Thomas W. Gibson, it received the name Dwarf, honoring another Combs brother, Jeremiah, who was known locally as "Short Jerry" because of his short stature.
Today, the Dwarf post office remains an active part of the community, located a short distance up Combs Branch from Troublesome Creek. The area's economy historically centered on coal mining, with numerous operations documented in 1918 on various branches and forks throughout Perry County's portion of Troublesome Creek, including several mines operated by members of the Combs family itself.
