Edina, a city in Hennepin County and first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, began in the 1860s as a small farming and milling community along Minnehaha Creek. In 1888, residents of what was then Richfield Township voted to incorporate as a separate village. The name Edina was chosen narrowly, winning 47 to 42 votes at a town meeting held in the Minnehaha Grange Hall, after debate with other proposed names including Hennepin Park and Westfield. The name came from Andrew Craik, who had moved from Edinburgh in 1869 and renamed the local mill Edina Mill. The early settlement included Irish families who had immigrated following the Great Famine, along with New England and German settlers. Edina's population grew significantly during the mid-twentieth century, transforming from a streetcar suburb in the early 1900s to a car-centric suburb in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, with a 2020 census population of 53,494, Edina ranks as the 18th most populous city in Minnesota. The city is known for its shopping and parks, and is home to Southdale Center, the United States' oldest indoor mall.
