Ellinger, a small city in Fayette County, Texas, sits along Texas State Highway 71 about twelve miles southeast of La Grange, near the Colorado County line. With a population of 203 as of 2021, this quiet community reflects the modest size it has maintained throughout much of its history.
The town's origins trace to Joseph Ehlinger, a French soldier born in Alsace who served under Napoleon and received land for his service. His son Charles founded the original settlement as Live Oak Hill a few miles north of the present location. When the Southern Pacific Railroad passed through the area, missing the original town by two miles, the community relocated closer to the rail line to capture business and travelers. During this move, the name changed to Ellinger, with the silent H removed for easier phonetic spelling. The town was officially laid out in 1883.
Early Ellinger thrived as a commercial center, with cotton production anchoring the local economy. By 1900, the town boasted fourteen businesses serving both residents and regional farmers. However, the arrival of the Missouri-Kansas and Texas Railroad through nearby Fayetteville in the early twentieth century redirected commerce away from Ellinger, causing decline. The community adapted by shifting toward ranching, grains, and pecans by midcentury, which helped sustain it through harder times.
Today, Ellinger maintains its rural character. St. John Lutheran Church, established in the town's early years, continues operating at the corner of Fayette and Grover Streets. The community incorporated as a Type C general-law municipality in November 2020, with residents voting in favor of this change.
