Enumclaw is a city in King County, Washington, with a population of 12,543 according to the 2020 census. The city sits on the Enumclaw Plateau, a remarkably level landscape formed by a volcanic mudflow from Mount Rainier approximately 5,700 years ago. The name Enumclaw derives from a Sahaptin word meaning "he who makes noise," though the City of Enumclaw interprets it as "thundering noise," referencing local Native American mythology about two brothers transformed into thunder and lightning.
The area's modern history began in 1879 when Frank and Mary Stevenson homesteaded the land. In 1885, the Northern Pacific Railroad routed their transcontinental mainline through the site, accepting the Stevensons' offer of cleared land for a siding. The Stevensons filed a plat with King County that year, built a hotel, and donated lots for a saloon and general store. Though initially called Stevensonville, residents chose the name Enumclaw after the distinctive promontory north of town.
During the 1880s and 1890s, the area thrived on hop farming, then transitioned to dairy farming when the crop failed. The city was officially incorporated on January 27, 1913.
