Epes is a town in Sumter County, Alabama with deep historical roots extending back to the early eighteenth century. The community originated at Fort de Tombecbé, a major French fortification built under Louis XIV in 1736 by order of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, governor of Louisiana. Strategically positioned atop an eighty-foot bluff overlooking the Tombigbee River, the fort served as a crucial trading post and military stronghold for the French, helping to solidify their relations with the Choctaws and check British westward expansion. Following European colonial powers' control through British and Spanish periods, the fort ultimately passed to the United States with the Treaty of San Lorenzo, marking the end of the European colonial era in Alabama.
The town itself was incorporated in 1899 and named for Dr. John W. Epes, who donated the right-of-way for the Southern Railroad. During its prosperous early years, Epes became a vibrant transportation and commercial hub, boasting three cotton gins, a cotton compress, cotton seed oil mill, creamery, handle company, two hotels, grocery stores, a drug store, and other businesses. The town gained further prominence in 1936 when Alabama's second stockyard opened there. Today, Epes remains a small community perched on the high bluffs of the Tombigbee River, with a population of 272 at the 2020 census, reflecting modest growth from 192 residents in 2010.
