Eufaula is the largest city in Barbour County, Alabama, situated along the Chattahoochee River on land once occupied by Muscogee Creek tribes, including the Eufaulas. The site experienced rapid transformation in the nineteenth century. By the 1820s, despite Creek claims to the territory, white settlers began moving in illegally, leading to the "Intruders War" in 1827 when federal troops removed them by force. Following the 1832 Treaty of Cusseta, white settlement became legal, and by 1835 the area was primarily owned by settlers who established a store run in part by William Irwin, giving the early settlement its first name. By the mid-1830s, the downtown was being platted and developed. The town was renamed Eufaula in 1842 or 1843, possibly to avoid confusion with Irwinton, Georgia, and was officially incorporated in 1857. German and Jewish settlers arrived in significant numbers during the mid-nineteenth century, founding a community cemetery with its first burial in 1845. By the late 1850s, Eufaula's location made it a major shipping center for cargo bound for the Port of Apalachicola and ultimately to world markets. As of the 2020 census, Eufaula had a population of 12,882, and much of its historic downtown character from the 1830s survives today as the Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District.
