Eva is a small town located in southeastern Morgan County, Alabama, and is part of both the Decatur Metropolitan Area and the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Originally called Cowhead when settlement began in 1820, just one year after Alabama achieved statehood, the community received its present name in October 1883. According to local tradition, Dr. Lewis Keller, a physician who had just delivered a baby girl named Eva Brandon, suggested the name at a community meeting because he felt the infant and the town were alike, both just beginning their journeys. The town officially changed its name from Cowhead in 1887 and incorporated as a town in 1963. Currently, Kent Chambers serves as mayor.
Education has long been central to Eva's identity. In 1916, sawmill owner Wiley Steward donated five acres for a school, and by 1918 the community had constructed a four-room schoolhouse through local donations. During the 1920s, under the leadership of Dr. J. G. Daves, known as the father of Eva School, the community raised funds for a high school despite the Great Depression. Eva's accredited high school opened in 1930 with a graduating class of three students. The school continued expanding with vocational agriculture and elementary buildings, completing a large stone gymnasium in 1938. In 1972, Eva High School consolidated with the newly opened Albert P. Brewer High School in Florette. Today, Eva School serves the community as a K-8 facility following a 1996 campus upgrade.
As of the 2020 census, Eva had a population of 589 residents, up from 519 in 2010.
