Evergreen is the county seat of Conecuh County, Alabama, and home to 3,520 residents according to the 2020 census. The city began as a settlement of early pioneers from Georgia and South Carolina starting in 1818, and was officially founded the following year when Revolutionary War veteran James Cosey and others established themselves in the area. Reverend Alexander Travis named the town Evergreen for the lush green foliage, plants, and ferns that surrounded it. When the former county seat of Sparta was destroyed during a federal raid in the Civil War, Evergreen became the new county seat in 1866 due to its more central location within the county. The city was incorporated on March 28, 1873.
Evergreen's early years were marked by significant hardship. A devastating tornado in 1882 destroyed every building in the city except the Episcopal church. Just over a decade later, in November 1895, two successive fires devastated the community, with one destroying all businesses and houses on the east side of the railroad, and another five days later destroying everything on the west side. The Conecuh County Courthouse itself burned four times between 1868 and 1895. Located near the center of Conecuh County with Interstate 65 passing through the northwest side of town, Evergreen has developed into a small but resilient community. The city covers 15.8 square miles and continues to serve as an important regional center for the county.
