Flora, a city in Clay County, Illinois, was founded in 1854 by Samuel White, an Ohio native who arrived in the county with his family in 1852. After purchasing 85 acres from the State of Illinois, White worked with County Surveyor Ethelred Nixon and John Brown to lay out and plat the original town in February 1854. The community grew from this foundation, with White generously donating land for schools, churches, a parsonage, streets, and alleys. He also gave land that became the Public Square, now known as Library Park, home to the Flora Public Library. White's vision extended to the railroad era; he deeded property to help secure a town depot as the rival settlement of Mooresville, located a mile west, declined. The B&O railroad became central to Flora's identity, with a depot built in 1872 and rebuilt in 1917 as a three-story brick structure that served as both a transportation hub and social gathering place. At its peak in the 1920s, the railroad employed half of Flora's wage earners. As transportation evolved and roads improved in the 1950s, the depot's importance diminished, though it gained recognition in 1998 when it was named one of three Clay County sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Flora remains a community of approximately 4,803 residents, surrounded by rolling countryside dedicated primarily to agriculture and livestock.
