Flushing, a city in Genesee County, Michigan, is home to 8,411 residents according to the 2020 census and serves as a suburb of Flint. The city originated as a mill town in the mid-1830s, its growth driven by the Flint River, the county's largest river, which provided essential water power for industrial development. The area's suitability for agriculture further encouraged settlement throughout the nineteenth century.
The community's name carries a notable history. When Charles Seymour Sr. arrived from New York in 1835 to purchase land, the original settlers had chosen the name Dover for their village. Upon discovering that Dover was already in use in Lenawee County, Seymour, a former resident of Flushing on Long Island, renamed the new community after his former hometown in New York State. In 1836, Seymour partnered with Horace Jerome, who held water rights in the area. Their collaboration proved successful, with a saw mill becoming operational by the summer of 1837. Jerome's departure came after his wildcat bank, the Flint Rapids Bank, failed in 1838. Seymour officially laid out the village plat on December 3, 1840, and later sold his interests to his brother James Seymour in 1843. James subsequently made an additional plat in 1847. Today, Flushing remains situated within Flushing Charter Township but maintains its own administrative independence, preserving its distinct identity within the greater Genesee County region.
