Frankenmuth is a small city in Saginaw County, Michigan, with a population of 4,987 according to the 2020 census. The city's name combines two German words: Franken, referring to the Franconia region of Bavaria where the original settlers came from, and Mut, meaning courage. Known affectionately as "Little Bavaria," Frankenmuth was founded by conservative Lutheran immigrants from the Roßtal area of Franconia in Germany who departed aboard the Caroline on April 20, 1845. After a seven-week voyage to New York and travel via canals and the Great Lakes, the settlers arrived in Saginaw and eventually reached their destination in August 1845.
The settlement was established primarily for religious purposes, with the Lutheran community planning to start a mission among Native Americans. The settlers chose a hilly area that reminded them of their native Mittelfranken and built their initial structures there. One of the first large buildings was a church, though missionary efforts ultimately failed as Native Americans were displaced within a few years. The colonists were committed to maintaining an exclusively German Lutheran community, pledging loyalty to Bavaria and the German language. This commitment to heritage remains strong today, with German still prevalent in local signage and speech. The church of St. Lorenz continues to offer monthly services in German. Frankenmuth became a village in 1904 and was incorporated as a city on October 1, 1959.
