The area has deep historical roots, beginning with the Muscogee Creek people who cultivated maize, squash, beans, and tobacco here for generations. Osceola, the famous Seminole leader born in 1804, was descended from a Creek woman and a Scots trader named James McQueen who married into the community. Franklin's educational legacy reflects both the town's segregated past and its connections to important institutions. By the 1890s, Franklin School served white students in grades one through eleven, operating with a spring and later a hand-dug well with a hand pump, heated by a wood-burning stove fueled by wood brought daily by students. The school closed in 1942, and its building was eventually repurposed as a community center and later as town hall after Franklin's incorporation in 1977. Harris Barrett School, constructed in 1903 with handmade bricks from Tuskegee Normal School students under Booker T. Washington's direction, served African American students. Washington and George Washington Carver were both active in the Franklin area, operating an experimental farm and assisting farmers of both races. The restored Harris Barrett School now operates as a historic museum at the corner of County Roads 27 and 36.
