The area has a deep historical foundation. The Lenape Native Americans, an Algonquian-speaking people, occupied this region before European contact. English settlers formed the majority of early colonial communities. The township's name likely derives from the historic region of Galloway in Scotland, though an alternative theory credits Joseph Galloway, a Loyalist delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774. During the American Revolutionary War, the territory hosted the Battle of Chestnut Neck in what is now Port Republic.
