Gasquet is an unincorporated community in Del Norte County, California, located 22 miles south of the Oregon border and 18 miles northeast of Crescent City. The town takes its name from Horace Gasquet, a prominent figure who owned gold mines, a hotel, railway, bank, and post office, and who also founded both Crescent City and Happy Camp. A post office operated in Gasquet from 1879 to 1902 and has operated continuously since 1949. The community sits within the Smith River National Recreation Area at an elevation of 384 feet.
For census purposes, Gasquet is designated as a census-designated place. According to the 2020 census, the population was 657, representing a modest decline from 661 in 2010. The community is known for its notably wet climate, receiving approximately 91 inches of rain annually, making it one of the wettest communities in California. Its mountainside location and proximity to the ocean contribute to this distinctive weather pattern.
Gasquet has historical significance beyond its founding. Pioneer Mary Adams Peacock carried mail between Crescent City and Grants Pass, Oregon during the 1880s and 1890s, and later managed hotels in Gasquet Village. In 1932, the Mary Adams Peacock Bridge across the Smith River on U.S. Route 199 near Gasquet was named in her honor, becoming the first bridge in California to be named for a woman. The bridge was originally built in 1926 and underwent remodeling in 1985.
