Gaylord is the county seat of Otsego County and the only city within the county. Located in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, this community of 4,286 residents as of the 2020 census has grown steadily from 3,645 people in 2010. The town's origins trace to 1873, when railroad expansion brought settlement to the area. Though unofficially called Barnes after a Michigan Central Railroad official, the community became known as the Village of Gaylord in 1874, named after Augustine Smith Gaylord, a respected lawyer who never actually lived there but maintained property in Hayes Township. Gaylord became the county seat in 1877, replacing Otsego Lake Village due to its central location and growing business activity. The town was officially incorporated as a village in 1881 and achieved city status in 1922 after a narrow vote of 114 to 93.
Early twentieth-century Gaylord flourished as an industrial center. The Dayton Last Block Works, which operated from 1895 to 1931, became one of the world's largest manufacturers of wooden shoe forms, bowling pins, and golf club heads using local hardwoods. The Gaylord Motor Car Company, formed in 1910, produced approximately 350 automobiles before failing in 1913. A second railroad, the Boyne City, Gaylord and Alpena, arrived in 1906 to complement the existing Michigan Central line.
Today, Gaylord embraces its distinctive character as an alpine village, featuring Tyrolean architecture throughout downtown.
