Geneva is a city in southeast Alabama that has served as the county seat of Geneva County since its incorporation in 1875. Located at the confluence of the Pea River and Choctawhatchee River, Geneva has been the largest city in Geneva County since 1940 and is part of the Dothan metropolitan area. In December 1862, Union troops from the 91st New York Volunteers captured the stern-wheel steamship Bloomer while it was docked on the Choctawhatchee River. More recently, on March 10, 2009, the city was touched by tragedy when a mass shooting occurred across three Alabama towns, including Geneva, resulting in the deadliest shooting spree in Alabama's history.
