Gloucester is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, situated on Cape Ann as part of the North Shore region. With a population of 29,729 at the 2020 census, the city has grown into an important center for the fishing industry and a popular summer destination. The area's history stretches back thousands of years to Native American inhabitation by the Agawam people under sachem Masconomet. European explorers arrived in the early 1600s, with Samuel de Champlain mapping the harbor in 1606 and calling it le Beau port. In 1623, men from the Dorchester Company established a permanent fishing outpost that became the first English settlement. This settlement eventually relocated around 1626 to present-day Salem due to poor soil conditions. English colonists slowly resettled the area, and Gloucester was formally incorporated as a town in 1642, taking its name from Gloucester in southwest England. The early economy relied on subsistence farming and logging, though rocky hills and poor soil limited agricultural development. Fishing gradually expanded from small family operations to eventually command the Grand Banks by the mid-eighteenth century. In 1873, Gloucester was reincorporated as a city. The town of Rockport, originally part of Gloucester's boundaries in an area called Sandy Bay, formally separated on February 27, 1840.
