Situated at the confluence of the West Branch Sunday Creek and Sunday Creek, the village rests within the Sunday Creek watershed in the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau, surrounded by gently rolling hills and large wooded areas. Originally named Sedalia, the village was renamed Glouster in 1886, a variant spelling of Gloucester, England, with the post office adopting this name in 1887. The community's growth accelerated during the late nineteenth century due to its position along the Sunday Creek coal seam, part of the Hocking Valley coal region. Mining, brickmaking, and railroads fueled the local economy through the early twentieth century. The Wassall Brick Company, which operated from approximately 1895 to 1932, became a notable enterprise providing structural materials for projects throughout southeast Ohio. Like many Appalachian coal towns, Glouster faced economic challenges as coal production declined in the mid-twentieth century, though mining's legacy continues to shape the community's geography and infrastructure. The historic Palos Covered Bridge, built in 1879 over the East Fork of Sunday Creek and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, stands one mile north of the village. Today, GoBus, a federally funded rural transit service established in 2010, connects residents to Athens, Columbus, and other communities.
