Positioned roughly 75 miles east of Dallas and 35 miles northwest of Tyler, the city sits at the intersection of U.S. Route 80 and Texas State Highway 110. After these tribes were displaced in the mid-nineteenth century, settlers including John Jordan established a primitive salt works that became known as Jordan's Saline, briefly serving as the county seat.
The arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railroad in the post-Civil War era transformed the community. A donated parcel of land became a depot called Grand Saline, and the city was officially incorporated in 1895 as residents relocated from Jordan's Saline to this new rail hub. Salt production for leather tanning and food preservation remained central to the economy, with companies like Richardson Salt Works, Lone Star Salt Company, and Kleer Salt Works operating in the area. The discovery of the nearby Van oil field in the late 1920s diversified the local economy, followed by manufacturing, sulfur processing, and meat packing industries during and after World War II.
