Granger is a city in Yakima County, Washington, with a population of 3,624 according to the 2020 census. Founded in 1902 and named after Walter Granger, superintendent of the Washington Irrigation Company, the city was officially incorporated on September 28, 1909. During the early twentieth century, Granger developed into an industrial center, supporting a tile and brick company as well as a cider mill during the 1910s and 1920s.
The city played an important role during World War II when the Granger Farm Workers Camp opened in May 1941, two miles north of the city. Built by the Farm Security Administration, the camp initially housed Dust Bowl refugees and later Mexican Americans who came to work in the Yakima Valley to address labor shortages caused by the war. This facility, also known as the Crewport, Washington Farm Labor Camp, remained in operation until the late 1960s.
Today, Granger is known for its distinctive dinosaur attraction, featuring thirty-two life-size dinosaur models constructed from steel rods, chicken wire, and cement. The first dinosaur was installed in Hisey Park in 1994, following a proposal made in 1993 to draw tourists to the community.
