Grawn is an unincorporated community in Blair Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, with a population of 816 according to the 2020 census. The area was originally founded in the 1870s as Blackwood, named after James B. Blackwood, its first settler. When the Chicago and West Michigan Railway was built through the community in 1890, the village was renamed Grawn Station to honor Charles T. Grawn, who served as superintendent of Central Michigan Normal School and later as superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. That same year, the name was shortened to simply Grawn, and the community received its first post office under postmaster William H. Gibbs. By the early 1900s, Grawn had developed into an agricultural community, with potatoes becoming the main crop by 1905.
The community's modern history includes a significant industrial incident in December 1995, when a fire broke out at Carl's Tire Retreading Company. The fire burned for twenty days, prompting evacuations of residents and Blair Elementary School. Investigation of the fire site revealed that PFAS chemicals, which had been used to extinguish the blaze, contaminated both the site and local wells. Grawn was officially designated as a census-designated place in 2010, establishing clearly defined boundaries and formal population statistics. Today, the community is located on US 31 and is served by Traverse City Area Public Schools.
