Hanford is the county seat and most populous city in Kings County, California, located in the San Joaquin Valley with a population of 57,990 at the 2020 census. Before American settlement, the Tachi Yokuts Indians inhabited the area for several thousand years, living along watercourses and ridges near what was once Tulare Lake, historically the largest body of fresh water west of the Mississippi River. Following California's annexation after the Mexican-American War, the region developed as farmland known as Mussel Slough. The settlement's name comes from James Madison Hanford, an executive for the Southern Pacific Railroad, which laid tracks through the area beginning in 1877 and catalyzed rapid growth. In 1880, the town became infamous for the Mussel Slough Tragedy, a deadly dispute over land titles between settlers and the railroad that claimed seven lives. By June 1880, Hanford's first census counted 269 residents, including forty-four Chinese immigrants living in China Alley. The town incorporated as a city in 1891 under Mayor Yamon LeBaron, the same year an electrical generating plant brought the city its first electric lights. When Kings County was created in 1893, Hanford became its county seat. The community continued developing with a second railroad arriving in 1897. Notably, pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart lived in Hanford during the 1930s, teaching flying lessons and befriending local residents before her 1937 disappearance.
