Harper is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located 23 miles west of Fredericksburg in Gillespie County, Texas. The area sits in western Gillespie County, approximately 84 miles northwest of San Antonio, with a population of 1,332 as of the 2020 census.
Gillespie County itself was formed in 1848 from Bexar and Travis Counties, following a petition submitted in December 1847 signed largely by German immigrants, though it also bore names like Castillo, Pena, Munos, and several Anglo settlers.
