John Carsley, who arrived in 1792 and remained permanently with his wife starting in 1793, is considered the town's first permanent settler.

The outlet of Crystal Lake into Long Lake provided water power for mills and various industries, including sawmills, gristmills, wire-making, and textile production. When the Cumberland and Oxford Canal opened in 1832, connecting Portland to Sebago Lake with a series of twenty-seven locks, Harrison became a vital center for trade and transportation. The era of steamboat travel on the lakes brought summer tourism, with The Elms Inn opening in 1860. Though the canal was abandoned after the railroad arrived in 1870, Harrison has remained a recreational destination.
