Havre de Grace is a city in Harford County, Maryland, at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Captain John Smith explored the river in 1608, when the Susquehannock lived along it. Travelers on the Post Road crossed the Susquehanna here by ferry, and the settlement was originally known as Susquehanna Lower Ferry. Its present name is attributed to the Marquis de Lafayette, who is said to have compared the site to the French port of Le Havre in 1782.
In 1781, French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau camped here on their way to Yorktown. Havre de Grace was incorporated in 1785. On May 3, 1813, during the War of 1812, British forces under Rear Admiral Sir George Cockburn sacked and burned the town. John O'Neill, recognized for his bravery during that raid, became the first keeper of the Concord Point Lighthouse when it entered service in 1827.
From 1840 to 1894, the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal linked the town to the Pennsylvania canal system at Wrightsville, and with the railroad it helped make Havre de Grace a commercial center with fish packing and mills. The Havre de Grace Racetrack, nicknamed "The Graw," operated from 1912 to 1950. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1975, and the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum opened in 1986.
