Helena is a city located in Jefferson and Shelby counties in Alabama, serving as a suburb of Birmingham and part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area. As of 2022, the city had an estimated population of 21,862. The area was originally home to the Muscogee people, known as the Creek Indians, until Indian Removal in the 1830s cleared the way for European-American settlement. The first settlers arrived in 1849, primarily War of 1812 veterans drawn to the peaceful valleys and streams following the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The town was initially called Cove, then Hillsboro, before receiving its current name from a railroad station named after Helen Lee, whom railroad engineer Peter Boyle courted. During the Civil War, Helena became an important industrial center for the Confederacy, with coal and iron ore mines and a rolling mill processing materials for the war effort. The town faced destruction when Union cavalry under James Harrison Wilson passed through on March 30, 1865, but rebuilt during Reconstruction with support from future governor Rufus Cobb. The city incorporated in 1877 and reincorporated in 1917 after errors were found in the original papers. Industrial decline followed World War I, with the rolling mill closing in 1923 and the Great Depression bringing hard times. A devastating tornado struck on May 5, 1933, killing twelve people and injuring seventy-five. Modern suburban growth from Birmingham transformed Helena in the late twentieth century, bringing significant population gains and development that continues today.
