The Nevada Legislature's 1946 decision to purchase the industrial infrastructure prevented the town's dissolution and paved the way for official incorporation on April 16, 1953, with a population of 7,500. In the decades that followed, Henderson developed a distinct identity through deliberate planning that emphasized single-family homes and retail development. The 1971 Green Valley development marked the beginning of master-planned communities that would drive the city's rapid growth. Following the 1988 PEPCON disaster, which caused significant damage and prompted major changes to industrial safety regulations, Henderson continued its trajectory of thoughtful redevelopment and reinvestment.
