Howells is a small village located in northern Colfax County in east-central Nebraska. The community was platted in 1886 when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad extended service to the area. The village takes its name from James Smith Howell, a local resident. The post office, established the same year the town was founded, was originally spelled without the final S until 1937, when it was changed to match the village's official name.
