Independence, located in Polk County on the west bank of the Willamette River, is a city with deep roots in Oregon's pioneer history. Founded by settlers who migrated from Independence, Missouri, the city grew from two separate townsites established in the mid-1800s. Elvin A. Thorp arrived in 1845 and founded the original town, naming it after his Missouri hometown and in honor of Andrew Jackson's characteristic of independence. Henry Hill arrived in 1847 and later platted a second townsite in 1867 after returning from the California gold mines. The two communities merged when the city was officially incorporated on February 26, 1885.
The city's early history was shaped profoundly by the devastating flood of December 1861, when the Willamette River inundated much of Independence after months of heavy rain and rapid snowmelt from the Cascades. The disaster destroyed the commercial district, farms, and livestock, prompting residents to rebuild on higher ground. By the early twentieth century, Independence had become a thriving center for agriculture and commerce, particularly known for hops production from the 1890s through the 1940s, even hosting the Hops Fiesta festival. The city served as an important shipping point for agricultural products and lumber until the 1950s. Today, Independence is home to 9,828 residents and is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area, with its historic downtown district recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
