Jacksonville, known colloquially as Jax, is the most populous city proper in Florida and the county seat of Duval County. For most of the period from 1565 to 1821, the region was part of Spanish Florida. Following a brief period of British rule from 1763 to 1783, a settlement developed at a narrow river crossing called Wacca Pilatka or "Cow Ford." After Spain regained control in 1783, a platted town was established in 1822 and named for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh U.S. president.
