Jetersville is a rural unincorporated community in southwestern Amelia County, Virginia, located just off U.S. Route 360 and centered around the intersection of State Routes 671 and 640. The Norfolk Southern Railway runs along the main roads through town.
Originally called Perkinsonville, Jetersville was renamed for either John "Black Jack" Jeter or his father, Rodophil Jeter, depending on local sources. The Jeters were reportedly French Huguenots who fled persecution and came to America around the early 1700s. Rodophil Jeter became a delegate to the state legislature and a prominent figure in Amelia County government during the early 1800s, and his family established several businesses in the area. The town's post office, one of the earliest in Amelia County, was established around 1826 or 1827.
Jetersville holds significant Civil War history. On April 5, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee encountered Union cavalry and infantry blocking his retreat route at the railroad station. Rather than attack, Lee changed direction for a night march toward Farmville. Days later, the last major battle of Lee's army occurred at Sayler's Creek, just miles away, before his surrender on April 9, 1865.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Schlegel and Keystone mica mines operated near Jetersville as part of profitable mining operations in the county, though the deposits were quickly exhausted. Around 1923 or 1924, Jetersville School was built as one of several Rosenwald Schools in Amelia County, designed to accommodate two teachers on a four-acre campus.
