Kennedy is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the town of Poland in eastern Chautauqua County, New York. Situated in the northeastern part of Poland within the valley of Conewango Creek, a tributary of the Allegheny River, Kennedy encompasses 2.0 square miles and had a population of 473 as of the 2020 census. The community's name reflects a rich history of changes. From 1805 to 1841, it was known as Kennedy Mills, honoring Thomas Ruston Kennedy, who founded the local mills that gave the hamlet its original identity. In 1841, the name changed to Kennedyville, and just eleven years later to Falconer, in tribute to Robert and William Falconer. However, in 1860, at the request of an Erie Railroad official, the hamlet reclaimed the name Kennedy. This final designation was cemented when a railroad station bearing the Kennedy name was constructed in 1861, establishing the community's modern identity. Today, Kennedy remains accessible via U.S. Route 62 and New York State Route 394, which intersect at the hamlet's center on the north side of Conewango Creek. The location offers convenient access to the Southern Tier Expressway, placing Jamestown nine miles to the west and Salamanca twenty-four miles to the east, making Kennedy a modest but historically significant part of the region.
