Knightdale is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, with deep roots in the region's colonial past. In 1701, explorer John Lawson passed through the area and documented a peaceful meeting with the Tuscarora Native American tribe. Settlement began in earnest when John Hinton arrived in 1730 near the Neuse River. Hinton became a Justice of the Peace and later a military leader during the American Revolution, playing a key role in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. Three of his original plantations—The Oaks, Midway, and Beaver Dam—remain standing today.
The town's modern identity took shape in the early twentieth century. Henry Haywood Knight, a local landowner, donated land to the Norfolk and Southern Railroad Company to establish a depot. Though Knight died in 1904 before seeing the railroad arrive, the community that followed bore his name. Knightdale was officially incorporated on March 9, 1927, with Bennett L. Wall as its first mayor. The town rebuilt after a devastating downtown fire in 1940 and expanded steadily after World War II, driven by the Baby Boom.
By the 1960s, commercial development shifted from the railroad depot to US Highway 64. This growth accelerated dramatically from 1990 onward. The town's population surged from 1,700 in 1990 to more than 6,000 by 2000, earning it recognition as the seventh fastest-growing town in North Carolina. Today, with a 2020 census population of 19,435, Knightdale continues to thrive with modern amenities including a high school, freeway access, and the revitalized Knightdale Station Park.
