Kopperl is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Bosque County, Texas, situated on the northwestern end of Lake Whitney. Founded in 1881, the town was named after Moritz Kopperl, a Galveston banker and railroad tycoon, and established as a regional shipping point along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. The community experienced significant growth in its early years, with population estimates suggesting it reached 329 by 1904, though some accounts from 1908 reported figures as high as 500 residents with 115 families. The population later declined to around 225 by the 1970s and has remained relatively stable since then, with 164 residents recorded in the 2020 census.
Kopperl holds a distinctive place in local history due to an extraordinary meteorological event. On June 15, 1960, shortly after midnight, a rare heat burst struck the community when a dying thunderstorm collapsed overhead. With little precipitation to cool the resulting downdrafts, superheated air descended as extremely hot, hurricane-force winds reaching 75 mph, with temperatures reportedly peaking near 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This dramatic event, known locally as "Satan's Storm," exceeded the official all-time high temperature for Texas and surpassed the highest official temperature recorded on Earth, becoming part of the community's enduring folklore. The town was also immortalized in "Texas Trilogy," a song by Texas native Steve Fromholz that was later covered by Lyle Lovett.
