Situated fifteen miles south of Buffalo along Lake Erie's shore, the community is bounded by Eighteen Mile Creek to the south, Pleasant Avenue to the north, Lake Erie to the west, and the village of Hamburg to the east.
The area's early development was shaped by prominent figures including Ebenezer Ames, Jacob F. Schoellkopf, a successful western New York entrepreneur, and Ebenezer Walden, a Buffalo attorney and former mayor. In 1880, the Walden family built the Lake View Hotel to accommodate traveling salesmen, known as "drummers," who arrived on seven daily trains via the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. These salesmen would rent horses and buggies from the hotel's livery stable to conduct business throughout the countryside.
Economic growth accelerated in the 1890s when two additional railroads—the Nickel Plate Road and the Pennsylvania Railroad—began operating through Lake View. An electric trolley called the Buffalo & Erie was constructed to connect the community with Buffalo, serving residents until the mid-1930s. The 1882 founding of the Idlewood Association established Lake View as a summer resort destination for Buffalo businessmen. Over the following decades, the community developed the Lake View School in 1890, the Day Bicycle Factory in 1895, and the Lake View Fire Association in 1923. The Lake View Community Church was established in 1889, followed by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in 1921.
