Lamont is a small town in Whitman County, Washington, with a population of 79 at the 2020 census. Officially incorporated on October 22, 1910, the town was named for Daniel Lamont, a former vice president of the Northern Pacific Railway. Lamont was founded as a terminal for the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, a joint venture of railroads controlled by Jim Hill. The original terminal included a depot, yard, a 22 stall roundhouse, and extensive locomotive servicing facilities with water and oil tanks for steam locomotives and a coal dock. Crews from Spokane and Pasco would lay over in Lamont before returning home, though the railroad soon reconsidered this remote outpost as a permanent terminal. When the roundhouse burned in 1913, crews began working through between the two cities instead.
The town remained an important stop for fuel and water. During World War II, a steel coal dock from the Great Northern in Montana replaced the aging wooden structure in 1944. Steam locomotives last passed through on June 22, 1956, after which diesel-electric engines took over. Lamont contributed significantly to railroad traffic through grain and livestock shipments over the years, and grain elevators still stand as landmarks in town. In 1970, several railways merged to form the Burlington Northern Railroad. By the mid-1980s, the former SP&S line lost through traffic, and the track was removed in 1991, becoming a state trail. Some remains of the roundhouse and service facilities still persist in Lamont today.
