Laurens is a town in the southern half of Otsego County, New York, located north of the City of Oneonta. According to the 2010 census, the town had a population of 2,424 residents. The town itself encompasses 42.7 square miles and contains a village of the same name, along with several hamlets and communities including Mount Vision, West Laurens, and Naylor Corners.
European settlement in the area began around 1773 when Joseph Mayall arrived about a mile north of present-day Laurens village. During the Revolutionary War era, the region experienced violence when the raiding party responsible for the Cherry Valley Massacre also pillaged part of Laurens and burned property. The Town of Laurens was officially formed in 1810 from the Town of Otsego and was named to honor Revolutionary War hero Henry Laurens.
Historically, the town developed an industrial base around water-powered cotton mills that utilized the waters of Gilbert Lake. In the eastern part of town, a resort called Otsego Park was developed by the Oneonta Mohawk trolley line. Geography shaped settlement patterns, with Otego Creek flowing southward through the eastern section, while New York State Routes 205 and 23 provided north-south and east-west transportation corridors through the town. The area also features a notable sulfur spring located about a mile north of Laurens village. Gilbert Lake State Park, partly situated on the northern town line, reflects the region's natural resources.
