Maple Plain is a small city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, located twenty miles west of Minneapolis along U.S. Highway 12. The community takes its name from the sugar maples that once filled its forests. Settlement began in 1854, centered around Lake Independence to the north and its outflow, Pioneer Creek, which still flows through the city's northwest corner today. The arrival of the St. Paul, Pacific and Manitoba Railroad in 1868 and 1869 helped establish Maple Plain as a viable community. By 1871, the town had its own post office, and it was officially incorporated as a village in 1912. Modern infrastructure developed gradually over the twentieth century, with village water arriving in 1939, sewer service around 1950, and blacktop roads in 1961. According to the 2020 census, Maple Plain had a population of 1,743 residents living in its 1.12 square miles. The city is served by U.S. Route 12 and several Hennepin County roads, and borders the city of Independence to the west. Maple Plain Library, founded in 1922 and relocated to its current location in 1973, serves as part of the Hennepin County Library system. The community is home to the Orono Public School District.
