Markleton is an unincorporated community in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, situated near the Casselman River about seven and a half miles east-northeast of Confluence. The area has a rich industrial and institutional history shaped by its natural resources and location.
The community was originally known as Philson's Forge, named after a bloomery built by Robert Philson around 1810 near the Casselman River. This early iron-working venture closed around 1823 without achieving success. The present name derives from Cyrus P. Markle & Sons, a paper company from nearby Westmoreland County that purchased five thousand acres along the river in 1881. The company constructed a paper mill to harvest the abundant timber and manufacture paper products, but this operation proved unprofitable and short-lived.
In late 1886, William J. Hitchman of Mount Pleasant purchased the Markle buildings and land to establish a combination vacation resort and health sanatorium. He partnered with Dr. Matthew B. Gault and Reverend John Morrison Barnett to form the Markleton Hotel Company. The former papermill buildings were converted into a grand hotel, and workers' cottages provided additional accommodations. By 1905, the sanatorium could house 150 guests and hosted meetings of various medical associations.
Following America's entry into World War I, the federal government leased the facility as U.S. Army General Hospital No. 17, specializing in treating soldiers with tuberculosis. The hospital opened in April 1918 with capacity for two hundred patients and operated until March 1919, publishing a semi-monthly newspaper called Star Shell during its service.
