Beginning around 1740, roughly 400 ships were built in local shipyards through the 1870s, establishing the town as a center of whaling commerce. The Acushnet, famously sailed by Moby-Dick author Herman Melville before he deserted, was among the vessels constructed here. The town supplied many East Coast whalers during the first half of the nineteenth century until the discovery of Pennsylvania oil led to commercial whaling's decline in the United States.
As shipbuilding waned, Mattapoisett transformed into a vacation destination for prominent New York and Boston residents, including Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. Today the town spans 24.2 square miles, with the harbor-centered Village as its core and Tinkhamtown as a rural northern section.
