McBride is a small village located in northeastern Montcalm County, Michigan, situated about six miles northeast of Stanton, the county seat, and four miles south of Edmore. The village encompasses 0.39 square miles and had a population of 189 residents at the 2020 census. The community grew from the enterprise of Alexander B. McBride, a settler from Wayne County, New York, who built a sawmill there in 1874. A railroad station was subsequently named McBride's Mill to reflect this industrial landmark. The village was officially platted by D. L. Jacobs in 1877, and the post office opened on March 26, 1878, with McBride serving as its first postmaster. The post office, which provides P.O. box service under the name McBrides with ZIP code 48852, continues to operate today. An adjacent settlement called Custer was platted by Phipps Wado on April 2, 1878, but was incorporated as part of McBride when the village was officially incorporated in 1883. Over the decades, McBride has remained a quiet rural community, maintaining its character as a small Michigan village rooted in nineteenth-century pioneer settlement and early industrial development.
