Micro is a small town in Johnston County, North Carolina with a population of 458 as of the 2020 census, making it the least-populated incorporated community in the county. The town's roots trace back to around 1890, when settlers began establishing the community along the Short-Cut rail line of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Originally incorporated in 1899 as Jerome, named after local landowner Jerome Creech, the town adopted its present name in 1905 to distinguish itself from another Jerome community located in nearby Bladen County. That same year, a wooden school for white children was constructed, reflecting the town's commitment to education. The building was later replaced by a brick structure in 1924, which served the community's students until 1987. Today, Micro covers 0.4 square miles and maintains its own municipal government, led by a four-member town commission consisting of a mayor and three commissioners, all elected at-large. The town also operates its own police department. Students in the area attend Micro Elementary School, North Johnston Middle School, and North Johnston High School, continuing the educational traditions established over a century ago.
