Millican is an unincorporated community in southern Brazos County, Texas, situated about fourteen miles southeast of College Station. Named after Robert Millican, the first white settler of the region, the area was initially developed by Robert Hemphill Millican and his son Dr. Elliott McNeil Millican beginning in the 1820s. By 1845, the settlement had grown into Millican Crossroads, with a post office established in 1849 and a stage-coach station opening in 1850. The community experienced significant growth when it became the terminus of the Houston and Texas Central Railway between 1860 and 1867. During the Civil War, Millican served as a training camp for five thousand Confederate soldiers.
The town holds a complex place in Texas history. From July 15 through 17, 1868, Millican was the site of severe racial violence during Reconstruction, when confrontations between Black and white residents erupted over rumors of a lynching near the Brazos River. One historian characterized this multi-day skirmish as the worst incident of racial violence in Texas during Reconstruction.
Millican was formerly an incorporated municipality, though its incorporation status became uncertain after 1871 when no municipal officials took office. In 2006, the Texas Attorney General's office ruled that Millican was no longer an incorporated municipality, having automatically dissolved under an 1897 state law requiring that cities with no executive officials for at least ten years would be dissolved. Today, Millican remains part of the Bryan-College Station metropolitan area, with a population of 240 as of the 2010 census, and is served by the Navasota Independent School District.
