Moab is the largest city and county seat of Grand County in eastern Utah, home to 5,366 residents according to the 2020 census. The town earned its name in 1880, likely inspired by the biblical region across the Jordan River, though some historians point to the Paiute word "moapa," meaning mosquito. Early residents twice attempted to change the name, submitting petitions for "Vina" in 1890 and "Uvadalia" at another time, both unsuccessful efforts.
Before becoming a town, the area served as a crucial Colorado River crossing along the Old Spanish Trail from 1829 through the early 1850s. Latter-day Saint settlers established the Elk Mountain Mission in 1855 to trade with travelers, but repeated Native American attacks, including the killing of James Hunt in September of that year, forced its abandonment. William Grandstaff, a mixed-race cowboy, became Moab's first successful non-indigenous settler in 1877, establishing a ranch with garden vegetables and cattle. A new wave of settlers arrived in 1878 under Brigham Young's direction, and Moab was formally incorporated as a town on December 20, 1902.
The construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1883 bypassed Moab, redirecting trade away from the historic river crossing and forcing the community to adapt its economy. During World War II, a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp near Moab was converted into an Isolation Center confining Japanese American internees deemed troublemakers by the War Relocation Authority. The center operated from January through April 1943, housing up to 53 men at its peak before most were transferred to Leupp. Today, Moab attracts visitors to nearby Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and serves as a popular base for mountain biking and off-road recreation. The town is also home to a Utah State University regional campus.
