Monaca is a borough in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, situated along the Ohio River about twenty-five miles northwest of Pittsburgh. With a population of 5,625 as of the 2020 census, it is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town's history stretches back to the eighteenth century, beginning with a land patent granted in 1787 to Colonel Ephraim Blaine, a Continental Army officer who served as commissary-general of the Northern Department during the Revolutionary War.
The modern town emerged in 1822 when Stephen Phillips and John Graham purchased the property and established extensive boat yards on the Ohio River. The area became known as Phillipsburg in their honor and gained prominence as a center for steamboat construction. In 1832, German immigrants who had separated from the Harmony Society purchased the land and established the New Philadelphia Society, a communal religious community. The borough was officially incorporated in 1840 under the name Phillipsburg. In 1892, the name changed to Monaca, honoring the Oneida leader Monacatootha, known as "Great Arrow," who was a warrior chief and representative of the Iroquois Confederacy.
Throughout its history, Monaca developed as an industrial center. The area contained large quantities of fire clay, and manufacturers produced enameled porcelain ware, glass, tile, tubing, drawn steel, and wire. Today, the Stölzle Glass USA plant continues this manufacturing legacy in the borough.
