Located 16 miles north of Muskegon, the county seat, this community is politically independent from the Montague Township that borders it on three sides. The city traces its origins to Noah Ferry, who founded Montague and named it in honor of his father, William Montague Ferry, a prominent figure who also founded Grand Haven and Ferrysburg in nearby Ottawa County. Noah Ferry was instrumental in establishing the city's post office in 1867, and Ferry Street, named after him, served as the main thoroughfare through town during the early years. Today, Dowling Street has become the primary route through the city, connecting Montague to neighboring communities and U.S. Highway 31. The city's history includes a significant Civil War connection through Ferry Church, built in 1874 to honor Noah Henry Ferry, who died fighting for the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
