Mount Washington is a hill in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, located on the southern banks of the Monongahela River and Ohio River. In the city's early history, it was known as Coal Hill due to the accessible Pittsburgh coal seam at its base, which supported several mining operations. Gray sandstone was also quarried from the hill for use in constructing the second Allegheny County Courthouse. By 1876, the hill had been renamed Mount Washington, and a year later, the first artistic view of Pittsburgh was drawn from this vantage point. The elevation makes Mount Washington an ideal location for photographing the city's skyline overlooking the river valley and downtown area.
German immigrants settled the hilltop in the early nineteenth century, working in river valley plants. Tired of climbing steep footpaths home after long workdays, they drew inspiration from the inclines of their former homeland and brought that idea to Pittsburgh. The Monongahela Incline, built in 1869 to 1870, was the first such structure. The Duquesne Incline opened to the public in May 1877, followed by the Castle Shannon Incline, which operated until its closure in 1964. These inclines transported passengers, freight, and even horses and wagons up the steep slopes.
