New Richmond, located in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, is home to 10,079 residents according to the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1857 when Hiram Foster led a group of settlers from Vermont to the area in search of timber. Foster established a sawmill on the banks of the Willow River, which initially drew more New England settlers and gave the early settlement its first name, Foster's Crossing. The town was later renamed New Richmond in honor of Richmond Day, the land surveyor who plotted the town, with the prefix added to distinguish it from another Wisconsin town bearing the same name. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, New Richmond attracted waves of immigration, first from Ireland and later from Germany, Norway, and Sweden. The arrival of railroad service in 1871 and again in 1885 further spurred the city's growth and connectivity to neighboring communities and major cities like St. Paul.
The city's history was forever marked by tragedy on June 12, 1899, when an F5-strength tornado tore through the region along a 46-mile path. New Richmond suffered a direct hit, with half of its residences destroyed and its entire business district leveled. The tornado killed 111 people in New Richmond alone, with 117 deaths across the affected counties. Despite the catastrophic damage, the community demonstrated remarkable resilience, rebuilding most homes and all but two businesses by the following winter with help from state and federal aid and donations. Most of Main Street was reconstructed within five months.
